Approval Procedure for the planned replacement of the 110kV Railway Power Line No. 150 “UfW Auhof – UW Wr. Neustadt”

Client: ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG
Project Duration: 2024–2025
Project Description: The 110kV railway power line No. 150 “Converter Station Auhof – Substation Wiener Neustadt” (short designation: “UfW Au – UW Nb”), section <branch pylon No. 34 (KG Wolfsgraben) – pylon No. 713>, was approved in 1955 and commissioned in 1958. This section of the line has a length of approximately 48.3 km and includes 180 steel lattice towers.

The changes resulting from the general renewal had to be assessed in terms of a before-and-after comparison, i.e., the impacts of the future power line minus the impacts of the existing power line. TB Raab GmbH was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG) to prepare an ecological expert report to assess environmental compatibility, as part of the submission documents for the nature conservation approval of the replacement construction project.

The expert report described and assessed the current condition of the protected assets (fauna, flora, and biodiversity). In addition, the expected project-related impacts during the construction and operation phases were identified and evaluated. Measures to avoid negative impacts were then described, and any remaining impacts were assessed in the report.

The investigation included mapping of the biotope types found within the directly affected intervention areas, as well as a survey of plant and animal species occurring in those areas, including information on their conservation status and threat level. Beyond these directly affected areas, zoological surveys were also carried out in the surrounding project area, depending on the animal species being studied.

The surveys were conducted in such a way that an assessment according to RVS 04.03.13 (Bird Protection on Transport Routes) and RVS 04.03.15 (Species Protection on Transport Routes) was possible. This report is based on planning and project documents provided by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), data from the European Environment Agency (Natura 2000 Network Viewer), Austria’s Red Lists, on-site inspections, and archive data from TB Raab GmbH.
